WELCOME TO FAYETTEVLLE!

The City of Fayetteville was founded in 1822 in Fayette County.  The town was organized by European Americans from territory ceded by force from the Creek people under a treaty with the United States during the early period of Indian extraction from the Southeast. Both city and county were named in honor of the Revolutionary War hero the French Marquis de Lafayette. Fayetteville was incorporated as a town in 1823 and as a city in 1909.

Fayetteville is currently growing at a rate of 1.20% annually and its population has increased by 15.57% since the most recent census, which recorded a population of 15,945 in 2010. Fayetteville reached it's highest population of 18,427 in 2021. Spanning over 13 miles, Fayetteville has a population density of 1,430 people per square mile.

In 2018, the City of Fayetteville used non-SPLOST funds to purchase a two-acre tract of land fronting Stonewall Avenue West in order the build a new City Hall facility. The new building consists of 34,000 sq. ft. of space designed as the anchor for a new City Center Park, and to be a landmark for current and future residents of our community.

The City also used Special Purpose Local Options Sales Tax (SPLOST) funds to purpose approximately 8 acres of land from the Fayette County Board of Education for the purpose of building a new City Park. The park consists of a wide range of amenities that include multiple playgrounds, a splash pad, an event center (The Dottie), a brewery, and a dog park for citizens and visitors to enjoy.
